Sydney is on Australia's southeast coast on the Tasman Sea , is the most populous and largest city in Australia, and is the capital of New South Wales. In 1788 Sydney was established as a penal colony and was built on hills above Port Jackson, which is famously known as the Sydney Harbour.
The Sydney Harbour attracts many visitors, and the large Harbour Bridge with its arch is super popular. In 2007 a record 250,000 people walked across the bridge to celebrate its 75th birthday. A footpath runs along its side for walkers and rollerbladers.
The Sydney Opera House is also located in this area and is an architectural masterpiece with amazing acoustics. Approximately 2,400 concerts, operas, ballets, dances, and theater events are held annually, and tickets sell out quickly. Also included is a studio that caters to emerging artists. Guided tours give visitors fascinating facts and videos.
There are beautiful national parks including the Royal Botanical Gardens which were created in 1816. The governor's wife had a chair chiseled right into the rock so that she could sit and enjoy the fabulous views. There are many highlights including a rose garden, rare plant collections, a Tropical Centre with its glasshouses. Free guided walking tours last one and one-half hours.

The Taronga Zoo is filled with kangaroos, koalas, Asian elephants, seals, birds, and 4,000 other critters mostly in open enclosures rather than cages. There isn't much parking, so it is better to take the Sky Safari cable car or a bus that will let you off at the main entrance.
The Sydney Observatory was built on a hill in the 1850s which earlier had the first windmill built in 1796. The Observatory has the oldest working telescope (1874) in Australia as well as a 3-D Space Theatre, astronomy exhibitions, and more.
The region has many rivers, inlets, bays, and especially beautiful beaches including Bondi Beach on the Pacific, which is one of the great beaches of the world. The surf is rough-and-tumble, and it is important to stay between the red and yellow flags so you won't be among the thousands who have to be rescued every year.
Sydney Australia is fashionable, artsy with actors and musicians who come there to launch their careers, sporty, and fun. The restaurants offer outstanding cuisine, and the bars are "hip". For an unusual experience go to Chocolate By The Bald Man with its large vats of liquid sweet chocolate heaven and amazing food choices such as strawberries dipped in chocolate. Try a Chocolate Fondue for Two which is served with marshmallows, fruit, and banana bread.
